Liberation Route Europe: A digital ecosystem to pass on history on a European scale
In 2020, the Liberation Route Europe (LRE) Foundation entrusted KERN IT with a strategic mission: to design a digital platform capable of making the history of Europe’s liberation during WWII accessible both online and on the ground.
The stakes were high: connecting thousands of kilometers of itineraries, hundreds of memorial sites, historical narratives, archives, and local testimonies within a unified, multilingual, high-performance, and scalable digital ecosystem.
Beyond a simple website, the project aimed to create a sustainable technological foundation capable of powering multiple frontends, a mobile app, and future digital experiences. It required advanced management of European mapping, fine-tuned control over heritage data, and an infrastructure built to scale.
Today, this platform has become one of the most comprehensive digital ecosystems dedicated to memory and heritage in Europe, supporting the transmission of history to an ever-growing international audience.

An intelligent exploration of European remembrance heritage
KERN IT designed a discovery interface allowing for the efficient exploration of a vast corpus of geolocated historical content across Europe.
Through a combination of dynamic filters, editorial navigation, and clear mapping, the platform provides structured access to WWII memorial sites, museums, stories, and archives.
This approach allows users to intuitively browse complex heritage by crossing geography, themes, and editorial content, ensuring a seamless experience despite the density of data and the project’s multilingual scale.

Historical itineraries that structure the experience
In addition to content-based exploration, the platform highlights liberation routes; the connecting threads between various locations and stories across Europe.
These historical trails offer a continuous narrative of events, blending geographical routes, points of interest, and historical storytelling into a single experience.
The visualization of these itineraries relies on advanced geospatial data management, allowing thousands of kilometers of trails to be displayed clearly and efficiently.
This architecture provides a solid foundation for mobile use, the addition of new themed routes, and the development of future cultural experiences without disrupting the existing core.
A mobile experience designed for on-the-ground discovery
To extend exploration beyond the web, KERN IT developed a native cross-platform mobile app, designed to support visitors before, during, and after their journey along the liberation routes.
The app transforms the digital platform into a practical discovery tool for field use.
Users can plan itineraries, discover ready-to-use themed routes, and access historical content linked to the sites they visit.
Each point of interest features an enriched profile, integrating text, images, themes, and historical markers, with an interface optimized for mobile viewing.
The app is built on a technical foundation that ensures:
- Seamless navigation optimized for mobile use
- Content synchronized with the central backend
- Offline access for areas with low connectivity
- Total continuity between web, mapping, and mobile
Through this approach, Liberation Route Europe offers animmersive and coherent experience, where technology fades into the background to prioritize storytelling and historical transmission, directly at memorial sites.
